We all know that our job resume is the foremost gateway to our desired job(s). And it is this knowledge that leads to people believing that lying on the resume is fine. It doesn’t seem much of a menace if it brings us a reward and we can always make it up later, right?
It seems like that’s not so. Once you have lied on your resume it isn’t possible to make it right without losing out some points for lying on the resume. And there is more than one reason why you should not be lying on the resume to get a job. Here’s why:
There’s background check
Recruiters are serious about hiring candidates as they are the ones who essentially keep their company running. They want candidates with skill and qualifications and most importantly they are aware of how easy a task can lying on the resume be.
The background check comes into the scene here.
If you are applying for a job in a big and reputed company, it is highly likely that your resume would be sent out for a background check before interview or hiring.
And if your falsely reported information is caught, you will lose whatever chances you might have had to bag the job (i.e. without lying).
You will get caught eventually
Let’s say you were able to get through the background check without being caught or that there was no background check at that particular company. How long do you think your lie will keep you going?
You must have lied about your skills and qualifications which are integral to your job role in the company. Eventually, you would be asked to show and exploit those skills and your lie will come up front.
It will not only get you caught but will be a big blot on your character. You might be suspended from the job too if the company thinks it to be in favor of the company.
Lies are lies even if little
So you just lied about a couple of little things that hardly matter. Firstly, why lie when it hardly matters? And then, lies are lies. If you are caught lying on the resume at a later date, it will reflect on you as a liar no matter how small the lie was.
It is not a good environment to work in where your recruiters and colleagues don’t trust you and have an image of you as a lair.

A series of lies
A lie barely stops at one. If you have false information on your resume and the recruiter questions you on the information, chances are that you would have to lie more about it. It’s never a good idea to exaggerate on your lie or build up a story as it increases the chances of you getting caught.
Remember that recruiters prefer truthfulness over impressiveness and a lie can actually reduce your chances of getting a job rather than increase it.
Conclusion
Lying on the resume is never a good idea. Even if you don’t have certain skills, you can make it up by being upfront about your learning process. Focus on your strong points rather than highlighting false information. Follow some smart resume hacks and you won’t even require lying on the resume to get a job!
