AMCAT Quantitative Ability
One of the three compulsory sections, the AMCAT Quantitative Ability skills test assesses the numeric ability of a candidate in core technical and non-technical aspects. Here is everything that you need to know about it:
What is Quantitative Ability?
Quantitative ability skills test refers to your ability and proficiency to understand and solve mathematical problems and calculations. A measure of quantitative ability is taken as part of most competitive exams, be it the CAT, MAT or GRE.
A skill assessment in quantitative ability checks your ability in basic mathematics – arithmetics, graphs, tables and percentages. These basics are needed in most jobs and career profiles.
How to prepare for quantitative aptitude test?
The AMCAT quantitative aptitude test is an 18-minute module, with 16 questions that a candidate must answer. As the overall AMCAT test is adaptive in nature, mistakes lead to easier questions (and a lower score), while correct answers would lead to tougher ones (and a higher score).

Basic Mathematics:
The questions are related to arithmetic ability, logarithms and probability. Here are a few questions that you can consider:

Step 1: Find the LCM of the numerators.
LCM (147, 30) = 1470
Step 2: Find the HCF of denominators.
HCF (64, 44) = 4
So, the LCM of 147/64 and 30/44 is (LCM of Numerators) / (HCF of Denominators) = 1470 / 4 = 735/2
Consider this:
The Correct answer: Option 3
Solution:
Let’s say the 7 numbers are a, b, c, d, e, f and g.
Given that:
(a + b + c + d + e + f + g) / 7 = 60
(a + b + c) / 3 = 50
(e + f + g) / 3 = 70
To find: The remaining number i.e. ’d’
Solving the averages we get:
(a + b + c + d + e + f + g) / 7 = 60
a + b + c + d + e + f + g = 420
(a + b + c) / 3 = 50
a + b + c = 150
(e + f + g) / 3 = 70
e + f + g = 210
Inserting the values obtained above in the equation given below:
a + b + c + d + e + f + g = 420
150 + d + 210 = 420
360 + d = 420
d = 60
Applied Mathematics:
Questions concerning Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Time, Speed and Distance, Inverse – those which require careful deliberation and the use of mathematics to seek solutions are part of this segment.
Consider this question:
Correct answer: Option 3
Solution:
Total amount paid by the customer for construction work = $600
Amount spent on the purchase of materials = 3/5 of the total amount = 3/5 * 600 = $360
Remaining amount = $(600-360) = $240
Amount spent on travelling = 1/5 of the remaining amount = 1/5 * 240 = $48
Total amount spent = $(360+48) = $408
Amount left after both the deductions = $(600-408) = $192
And this one:
Correct answer: Option 3
Solution:
Let’s assume that the principle amount is $100.
It is given that when this amount ($100) is invested for 10 years, the simple interest becomes double of this amount i.e. it becomes $200.
So, the interest rate being offered can be calculated as:
Simple Interest = (P * R * T) / 100
Where,
P = Principle
R = Rate of Interest
T = Time (in years)
200 = (100 * R * 10) / 100
200 = 10 * R
R = 20%
And finally, here’s the last one:
Correct answer: Option 1
Solution:
Let the speed of the river be ‘x’.
Given:
Distance of rowing the boat = 30 miles
Speed of the boat in still water = 15mph
Time taken to row the boat in the river = 4.5 hours
The speed of the boat when downstream is, (15 + x) and when upstream is, (15 – x).
Time = (Distance / Speed)
4.5 = [30 / (15 +x)] + [30 / (15 – x)]
4.5 = [30 (15 – x) + 30 (15 + x)] / [(15 +x) (15 – x)]
Applying the identity: (a + b) (a – b) = a 2 – b 2 , in the denominator:
4.5 = (450 – 30x + 450 + 30x) / (15 2 – x 2 )
4.5 = 900 / (225 – x 2 )
4.5 (225 – x 2 ) = 900
1012.5 – 4.5 x 2 = 900
4.5 x 2 = 112.5
x 2 = 25 and therefore, x = 5 and x = -5. Ignoring x = -5, the speed of the river is 5 mph.

A good performance in the AMCAT Test helps you connect to relevant, matched jobs, which you may not get access to owing to marks, location, lack of contacts. We recommend preparing as per the syllabus (explained in our Cracking the AMCAT series) for Quants, English and Computer Science.
Remember – there is no negative marking, so try to answer everything.
Here are the specific areas you would need to target:
1. For English:
Vocabulary, Grammar (Correcting Errors, sentence construction, subject-verb, Tenses, Speech and Voice), Reading Comprehension. Focus on getting the Grammar elements right, followed by the Reading Comprehension and then vocabulary.
2. For Quants:
Focus on Applied Maths (Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Time, Speed and Distance AND Inverse), followed by questions for Basic Maths (LCM, HCF, Divisibility, Numbers, decimal fractions and power).
3. For Computer Science:
Operating System and Computer Architecture (Basics of OS, Computer Architecture, Process Management and Synchronisation, Memory and I/O Management), D BMS (Data model, Relational Algebra and SQL, Normalisation, Architecture, Indexing) and Computer Networks (Basics of networking and communication, OSI, TCP/IP layers and protocols, Network Devices and Routeing Algorithms)
DBMS is often cited by candidates as being a high difficulty segment in the test. Focus here, followed by OS and Networks.

There are no recommended books or websites to prepare for amcat as such. What you can do is go through the previous years’ papers and make sure you are thorough with the syllabus. Also, you can register for prepAMCAT and check your level of preparation before appearing for the main exam.

You don’t need any website or any other source for your amcat preparation. Just go through the syllabus of the exam, and prepare from your course books itself. Additionally, to check the level of your preparation you can use PrepAMCAT which is a mock amcat test. You can also go through some of the previous years’ papers to understand the pattern.
