Aptitude tests for jobs

Aptitude tests are tests of general intelligence that rate one's cognitive abilities. They comprise of various subtests that measure one's logical ability, numerical ability and attention to detail. They may also contain tests of multiple intelligences such as spatial reasoning and motor skills. A lot of aptitude tests these days also include language proficiency tests such as those of spoken and written English. These tests measure the ability of a person to learn new concepts, succeed in educational programs and do well in certain tasks. They are extensively used in entrance exams to offer admission to capable candidates in educational programs and also as hiring tests for jobs. For example, an aptitude test can help to determine whether a person could learn programming easily or do well at a banking job.

HISTORY

A need to implement standardized aptitude tests was realized in the early year of 605 AD when a nationwide standardized test was first conducted in ancient China to select able candidates for specific governmental positions. Later, England adopted this examination system to select specific candidates for Civil Services. Subsequently, this examination system started to influence other parts of the world as it became a prominent standard of delivering standardized tests. One such test, Mensa, was founded in England in 1946. The idea was to form a society of people whose IQ was in the top 2% of the population. Such tests thus ensured that the examination system was devoid of any biases and selection of candidates was entirely meritocratic.

EVOLUTION

Over the years, standardized aptitude tests have been introduced in the recruitment space too and are playing an extensive role in maintaining meritocracy in the labor market. Currently, in the job market, there are hundreds of applicants for every job opening. While a high number of applicants means more competition for a job seeker, it is an equally daunting situation for an employer to identify talented candidates merely by referring to a college scoresheet or a resume. Aptitude tests thus play a crucial part in helping employers recognize able candidates and are equally helpful to job seekers as they are able to demonstrate their skills to employers. As more and more employers are now using aptitude tests to distinguish between applicants, a score on a quantitative or logical ability aptitude test could be the difference between getting an interview or not. Aptitude tests have become of paramount importance to job seekers in today's competitive job market and it has thus become imperative not to neglect their importance when preparing and seeking for jobs. With every organization conducting their own aptitude tests as a part of their hiring process, it becomes a tedious task for job seekers to sit through multiple tests.
