Biotechnology is to develop useful products by using living systems and organisms, or "any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use" (UN Convention on Biological Diversity, Art. 2). We have been using biotechnology in agriculture, food production and medicine for thousands of years now.

Biotechnology is defined by the American Chemical Society as the application of biological organisms, systems, or processes by various industries to learning about the science of life and the improvement of the value of materials and organisms such as pharmaceuticals, crops, and livestock. Biotechnology has applications in major industrial areas like health care, food production and environmental uses like treating waste, recycling, etc.

As of now, there are over 250 biotechnology vaccines and other healthcare products available for patients suffering from various diseases, many were previously untreatable. Over 13 million farmers across the world use biotechnology increase production volumes, prevent their crops from pests & insects and reduce the harmful effects on environment.

Working in biotechnology allows you to work on varied and interesting projects and you can gain experience of the business as a whole. Working in biotech will help you learn important skills like production, quality control processes, marketing, operations, etc. Also, there are lot more opportunities to move to different roles within the company and try different roles.
